Lennon and Harrison bought two identical J160E guitars in the
summer of 1962, just in time for the recording of their first single, Love Me
Do. The J160E is a round-shouldered acoustic guitar with a single-coil pickup at
the end of the fingerboard, two control knobs on the body, a laminated top,
mahogany back and sides, a rosewood fingerboard, trapezoid inlays, and a
sunburst finish.
It was John and George's main acoustic guitar for many years, both in concert
and in the recording studio, where it was recorded, depending on the case,
directly with the pickup, with the microphone, or with both. To experiment with
new sounds, the pickup was often moved from its original position, moving it
between the soundhole and the bridge. The J160E remained Lennon's most used
acoustic guitar throughout his career as a Beatle and beyond. The Beatles made
extensive use of acoustic guitars: Paul, for example, began using an Epiphone
Texan, a model similar to the Gibson J-50, in 1965, and almost entire albums had
acoustic accompaniment, such as Beatles For Sale. Even today, it is a great
pleasure to hear John's typical fluid picking: I'll Be Back, No Reply, I'm A
Loser, Help! and Norwegian Wood are just a few examples.
